VISCOSITY

Most of today’s oils are Multigrades and fall into 2 viscosity grades (10w) (40)for instance Multigrades were  developed around 50 years ago as technology moved forward they avoid using a thinner oil in winter and a thicker oil in summer. In a 10w-40 for example the 10w bit the W = winter, this simply means that the oil must have a certain maximum viscosity or flow at low temperature. The lower the “W”  the better thinner the oil which is better for cold start performance.

The 40 in a 10w-40 is still a reading at temperature which means that the oil must fall within certain viscosity limits at 100°C. Again, the lower the number, the thinner the oil will be for example, a 30 oil is thinner than a 40 oil at 100°C and so on. Please use your vehicle handbook if in any doubt what is required.
